The standalone version of Tedds only allows you to have one calculation per document. Tedds for Word is more powerful and allows you to include as many calculations as you like in the same document. However if one document includes multiple calculations you are likely to find that two or more calculations use variables with the same name, this will cause the second calculation to overwrite the values stored by the first calculation. To resolve this problem Tedds for Word includes support for Calc Sections.

Calculation Sections

Calc Sections allow you to separate your document into a series of different sections, each Calc Section has its own private list of variables referred to as Section Variables. The Section Variables in one Calc Section will never be overwritten by another Calc Section. If you are not using Calc Sections or you have calculations at the start of your document before a calc section has been defined then variables are stored as Document Variables.

Tedds for Word provides a number of different commands to assist you when working with calc sections these commands are available from the Tedds Calc Section menu or the Tedds Calcs toolbar.

Adding a new Calc Section

  1. Click on the document where you want to start a new Calc Section.
  2. On the Tedds menu, point to Calc Section, and then click Add... or use the Add Calc Section command button from the Tedds Calcs toolbar.
  3. In the Title box, type the title of the Calc Section, this title will appear in the document.
  4. If you want to start the Calc Section on a new page then check the Insert page break box.
  5. Click OK

Tedds for Word will now insert a specially formatted Word field into your document that defines the start of a new calc section, the title you entered will be displayed as the fields result. Tedds will also create a new empty list of variables for the new Calc Section. A Calc Section ends at the start of the next Calc Section or the end of the document if there are no further Calc Sections defined.

If you now click the Show Field Codes button on the Tedds Format toolbar you will see the field code that Tedds for Word has inserted to define the start of the new calc section.

{=CSC|SECTION|1}

The field code consists of three parts each separated by a | character, the first part =CSC, identifies the field as a Tedds field, the second part SECTION identifies the field as the start of a Calc Section, the final part is a number that declares the Section Id. The section Id must be unique within the current document and is used to link this Calc Section to its list of stored variables. For this reason a Calc Section cannot be saved to a Calc Item in a Calc Library. If a saved Calc Section were retrieved from a Calc Library there would be no guarantee that the section Id was unique to the current document. The Section Id should never be manually modified as this will break the link between the document and the stored variables for the Calc Section. All of the Calc Section commands provided by Tedds ensure that the Section Id is correct, for example when copying a Calc Section a new section Id is automatically generated.

Navigating Calc Sections

Two commands are available from the Tedds Calcs toolbar to easily move between the Calc Sections in a Document. Goto Prev Calc Section and Goto Next Calc Section, will move the insertion point to the beginning of the previous or next Calc Section respectively.

Calculating a Calc Section

When a document includes multiple calc sections it can be calculated in the normal way using the Calculate All command. However as you add more Calc Sections to a document the document will inevitably take longer to calculate, for this reason you may want to calculate one Calc Section at a time. Tedds provides a number of calculating commands one of which is Calculate Calc Section.

  1. Move the Insertion point to the Calc Section you want to calculate.
  2. On the Tedds menu, point to Calculate, and then click Calc Section or click the Calculate Calc Section button on the Tedds Calcs toolbar.

Managing Calc Section Variables

If you want to view or modify variables within a calc section you can use the standard Tedds variable manager.

  1. Move the insertion point to the Calc Section you want to work with
  2. On the Tedds menu, point to Show Variables... or use the Show Variables command from the Tedds Calcs toolbar.

Editing a Calc Section Title

Although the Title for a Calc Section is visible within the document it is not recommended that you directly edit the calc section field because if you change the field codes or accidentally delete the field then the link between the document and the calc section variables may be broken. To edit a calc section title:

  1. Move the insertion point to the Calc Section you want to edit.
  2. On the Tedds menu, point to Calc Section, and then click Edit...
  3. In the Title box, type the new title for the Calc Section.
  4. Click OK.

Deleting a Calc Section

To delete a calc section from your document including all the section variables:

  1. Move the insertion point to the Calc Section you want to delete.
  2. On the Tedds menu, point to Calc Section, and then click Delete Calc Section.

Copying a Calc Section

If you want to copy the Calc Section to the Windows clipboard before deleting the section use the Cut Calc Section command instead. Using the commands provided it is possible to create a second copy of a Calc Section within the current document, or to copy a Calc Section to another document. Using the commands provided ensures that a new unique calc section is created including a copy of all the stored variables for the section. To copy a Calc Section:

  1. Move the insertion point to the Calc Section you want to copy.
  2. On the Tedds menu, point to Calc Section, and then click Copy Calc Section or use the Copy Calc Section command from the Tedds Calcs toolbar.
  3. Move the insertion point to the location where you want to insert the copy of the Calc Section.
  4. On the Tedds menu, point to Calc Section, and then click Paste Calc Section or use the Paste Calc Section command from the Tedds Calcs toolbar
