I do not appear to have Tedds for Word installed - the software launches straight into Tedds and I do not see a Start Wizard

When you run Tedds, it searches your PC for an installation of Word.  If none are found then Tedds launches straight into the Tedds application and does not display the Start Wizard and the option of Tedds for Word. To find Word, Tedds searches the current user Registry and uses the Word ProgramDir path to find the Word application file Winword.exe.

Step 1

First ensure the version of Word you are running is supported by your version of Tedds. Details of supported Word Versions can be found in the system requirements for each Tedds version.  See also the related article Does Tedds work with Office 365 - as this states, the Word application must be installed locally (i.e. on your PC) for Tedds to work with it.

Step 2

You must run Microsoft Word at least once when logged in as the particular user before using Tedds for Word, the necessary user registry entries which Tedds uses to find Word will then be created. Just launch and close Word and then try Start Tedds again.

Step 3

Run Tedds and check the Options setting Startup > General "Automatically start the most recently selected application" is NOT enabled. If it is, then uncheck it.

Step 4

  1. Open the registry and locate the following key for your installed Word version: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\XX.0\Word\Options\
    1. Where "XX" will be the version number (from 12, 14, 15 or 16) of the Word version you have installed - see below for a list of these.
  2. Find the appropriate ProgramDir for the version of Microsoft Office installed, see below
  3. Verify winword.exe exists in this location.
  4. If it does not, then search in Windows Explorer and find where winword.exe is installed.
  5. Update the ProgramDir value to the correct location where winword.exe is installed.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\XX.0\Word\Options\]
where XX is the version number for the Office version installed of:
  • 12.0 = Microsoft Word 2007*
  • 14.0 = Microsoft Word 2010*
  • 15.0 = Microsoft Word 2013
  • 16.0 = Microsoft Word 2016/2019
    • *Note that these Word versions are not supported in Tedds 2020 or later
