Tedds for Word is implemented as an Add-In for Microsoft Word, because of this it depends heavily on how well Word is working. If Word is unreliable or performance is slow then the same problems will directly affect Tedds for Word as well.
The following suggestions for improving the reliability and performance of Word are based on Word 2007, other versions of Word may differ slightly.

System Performance

The performance of all Windows applications obviously depends a great deal on the specification of the computer you are using. Faster processors, hard disks and graphics cards will always improve performance but the single biggest performance benefit can often be gained by adding additional memory to your computer. Computer memory is relatively cheap and software applications will often use as much as they can up to the limit of the operating system in order to improve performance.

Updates

Microsoft regularly releases updates and Service Packs for Word that contain security enhancements as well as stability and performance improvements. Applying the latest updates is usually essential to ensure that you are using the most reliable version of Word available. To ensure you are using the latest version of Microsoft Word we recommend that you use Windows Update and enable automatic updates.

Compressing Pictures

When Tedds calculates a document it has to make a copy of all the document elements you are calculating including text, pictures, tables etc. Even though the pictures in your document are not actually calculated Tedds still needs to make a copy of them so that when it updates your document with your calculation results all the pictures and other document elements are put back correctly. Pictures use considerably more storage space in your document and your computer's memory than text does, therefore anything you can do to reduce the size of your pictures can significantly improve calculation performance.
Reducing the size of pictures is particularly important when your document contains scanned pictures which are often captured at unnecessarily high resolutions. To improve calculation performance you can reduce the amount of data the pictures in your document are using by compressing them:
  1. Using your right mouse button click on any picture in your document.
  2. Click Format Picture.
  3. Click the Picture tab.
  4. Click Compress.
  5. For the Apply to option select All pictures in document.
  6. For the Change resolution option select Print (Resolution: 200 dpi).
  7. Make sure Compress pictures and Delete cropped areas of pictures are both enabled
Compressing pictures will sometimes result in a reduction in picture quality so make sure you check the results after compressing to ensure you are happy with the results.

Hiding Pictures

Word's Picture placeholders option displays an empty box in place of each graphic in your document. This option can speed the process of scrolling through a document that contains a large number of graphics on a slow computer. To change this option:
  1. Select File > Options.
  2. Click Advanced.
  3. In the Show document content section enable the Show picture placeholders option.

Hiding the Header and Footer

The header and footer of a document can only be viewed in the Print Layout View, however even in this view it is possible to hide them in order to improve performance or to maximize the space used to display the main text on each page. To hide the header and footer in print layout view:
  1. Select File > Options.
  2. Click Display.
  3. In the Page Display options section disable the Show white space between pages in Print Layout View option.

Spelling & Grammar Checking

Word's Spelling and Grammar checker can be very useful tools for writing professional documents, however when writing calculations they can sometimes cause problems because calculations are often not suitable for spelling and grammar checking. By default Word checks spelling and grammar as you type this means that when you have calculated a document in Tedds for Word and the results are returned to the document Word then proceeds to spell and grammar check everything that has been calculated. When calculating a large document this process can slow down the calculation process. The calculations in the Tedds Engineering Library are written using paragraph styles that deliberately have spell checking disabled to reduce this problem. However if you still want to disable spelling and grammar checking:
  1. Select File > Options.
  2. Click Proofing
  3. Disable the Check spelling as you type option.
  4. Disable the Mark grammar errors as you type option.
