Question

When running any of the calculation commands, an error is reported which prevents me from calculating. How can I resolve this?

Answer

This issue often occurs as a result of upgrading from a 32bit version of Office to a 64bit version. However, the problem can also manifest itself in several different ways, because there are several different areas of the software which rely on the Microsoft Word integration working correctly and if it has become corrupted on a system then various features may not work. These include the following:
  • Calculating in Tedds for Word does not work
  • Executing items within the Library Access System either doesn't work at all or it partially works (Item is inserted in Word but Calc Section cannot be created)
  • Sending documents from Tedds to Tedds for Word either doesn't work at all or it partially works (document is inserted in Word but Calc Section cannot be created)

The following errors may be reported as a result of this problem:

  • "An error has occurred whilst calculating, the document cannot be updated"
  • "Failed to get the active instance of Word. Click on a document in Word, then try this operation again"
  • "Failed to create new Calc Section (null) Error (0x80029c4a)"
  • Failure during Send To Tedds For Word - "Failed to load the Tedds for Word add-in." followed by "Failed to start an instance of Word"

Resolution 1

In most cases carrying out a full Uninstall and Reinstall of Microsoft Office should resolve the problem (while a Repair may resolve the issue we have often found that it does not).  Please ensure that all office applications e.g. Outlook, Excel etc. are closed before attempting to do this.

We strongly recommend that the Office uninstall support tool is used.  Download this from this dedicated Microsoft Support page; Fix errors that occur when you're updating Office

Follow all of the instructions on this page under the heading Uninstall and reinstall Office

A reboot may be required for this to take effect.  When the Uninstall and Reinstall is complete, try using Tedds for Word again.

Resolution 2

Check which version of Microsoft Office is installed, then browse to the following Registry key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wow6432Node\TypeLib\{00020905-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

Note: 'Wow6432Node' is not required if the Windows operating system is 32-bit)

There should be a sub key for each version of Word that has been installed on the machine:
  • 8.4 - This is Office 2007
  • 8.5 - This is Office 2010
  • 8.6 - This is Office 2013
  • 8.7 - This is Office 2016

If a key exists for a version of Office later than the version that you have installed e.g. you have Office 2013 installed, but an '8.7' key also exists, then rename the key of the later version e.g. put an underscore before the '8.X', then try calculating within Tedds for Word.

The key for the later version of Office may exist if a component of a newer version of Office has been installed e.g. Lync - this may have installed and registered some common components like the Interop assemblies for a newer version of Word.

Please note that if the later version Office component e.g. Lync is repaired/updated/patched then the later version registry key is likely to be restored and re-create the problem. Creating a registry file to remove this key is recommended which will provide a quick workaround in case the issue returns.

If the issue persists after attempting the above then please contact your local Trimble Helpdesk for further information.
