What is Tekla Structural Designer LT?

Available exclusively as part of the Tekla Tedds subscription package, Tekla Structural Designer LT has all the features and functionality of Tekla Structural Designer, limited to 200 members.

I have a Tekla Online license subscription for Tekla Tedds and Tekla Structural Designer - when launching Tekla Structural Designer I see a license for Tekla Structural Designer LT - what is this?

Tekla Structural Designer LT is a license that is part of your Tekla Tedds license. It allows you to use a limited version of Tekla Structural Designer - see “What are the limitations of Tekla Structural Designer LT?

Scope

What are the limitations of Tekla Structural Designer LT?

There are two limitations to the LT license:

What are the element limitations of Tekla Structural Designer LT?

Tekla Structural Designer LT has a limitation of 200 members and 8000 shells (2D Solver Elements).

What does the 200 member limit encompass?

The 200 member limit is based on the following

  • 1 Beam Span = 1 member
  • 1 Column = 1 member

What does the 8000 shell limit practically mean?

8000 shells is the maximum number of mesh elements that can be present within the LT version at any one time. Using a default mesh size of 1m (3 ft - 6 in) means that in a 1m2 (12 ft2) area there would be roughly 4 shells (accounting for column meshing).  The mesh limit includes both slab and wall objects that are meshed.

Please note that shell sizes (and thus the number in a given area) can differ significantly, especially in areas bounding slab perimeters and around columns and openings, where an increased amount of smaller shells would be present.

How may I determine how many members/shells the project contains?

To identify the quantity of members or shells a model contains, click on the Project Wiki command (Home toolbar). Then click on Metrics, the model total for members is the summation of the Total Number of Beam Spans and Total Number of Columns for each member type, Steel, Concrete, Timber, Cold Formed, Cold Rolled and Other.

What happens if I exceed my member count/limit?

The ability to save the Tekla Structural Designer model will be affected. The Save and Save As commands will be disabled and will not become available until both the number of members and shells is reduced below the 200 and 8000 respective limits.

In addition to this, no analysis or design commands will be available when the model exceeds the limits.

What regional design codes of practice are available?

All design codes held within Tekla Structural Designer are also available inside the LT version.

Does the LT version have any analysis/engineering limitations?

No, there are no limitations to design or analysis capabilities within the LT version.

Licensing

I have a perpetual license of Tekla Tedds - do I have access to Tekla Structural Designer LT

No - Tekla Structural Designer LT is part of the Tekla Tedds subscription licensing - see “Frequently asked questions: Analysis and Design subscription licensing

Can someone else use the Tekla Structural Designer LT license while I use the Tekla Tedds license?

No - the Tekla Tedds and the associated Tekla Structural Designer LT license are tied together. So if a user claims either the Tekla Tedds or the Tekla Structural Designer LT they effectively claim the corresponding license too.

Usage

Can my LT project be used in Tekla Structural Designer?

Yes, all LT projects saved within the LT version can be used within the full version of Tekla Structural Designer. Also please note that any model created in the full version of Tekla Structural Designer can also be opened within the LT version. However please note that if the model exceeds the limiting amounts of members or shells, it may not be saved, analyzed or designed within the LT version.

May I produce reports and drawings from the LT version?

Yes, all report and drawing functions can be used within the LT version. Report and drawing commands are still available for use even if the model limits reported earlier are exceeded.

What happens if I import a model using BIM Integration commands with more than the allowed number of members?

The import process will work and complete as per the Tekla Structural Designer software. However, no analysis and design commands or Save commands will be available until the model is reduced under the stipulated member and shell limit.

If a model contains more than 200 members or 8000 shells will the model export commands still be available?

Yes, all models exceeding the member and shell limits described earlier may still be exported to Tekla Structures and selected third-party software.

Is it possible to construct a model in the LT version and move to perform the design in Tekla Structural Designer?

Yes, all models which can be saved within the LT version may be opened and designed within Tekla Structural Designer.

Troubleshooting

Why am I unable to save my project?

The Save and Save As commands are no longer available as the model exceeds either the 200 member or 8000 shell limit. Reduce the amount of members or shells in the model in order to access the Save commands.
