When using an Online License, Tedds opens but does not respond when I run a calculation. Why is this?

Question

When I run Tedds, I sign in and select my Online License and it opens OK.  But when I run a calculation it does not respond - I just see the Windows spinning wheel and no calculation appears.  It seems as if the application has hung.  What is wrong and what do I need to do to fix it?

Fix

The issue with the Selected Product License (see section below for details), has now been fixed by Tekla Tedds 2020 - Service Pack 1 and Tekla License Service update May 2020 (v3.1.2).  Both these are required.  When these updates have been installed you will be able to work without enabling this option should you wish to do so.


Explanation & Workaround

This issue can only occur with Online Licensing and in the following two circumstances:

  • Sign in Status - You did not enable the “Stay signed in” option when you signed in to run the application

and/ or...

  • Selected Product License - You did not enable the “Don’t ask me again” option if you were asked to choose which Product License to use

In both these cases the Tedds application will open, but when you run a calculation it will try to check your online license again.  At this point the Sign in and/ or the Select Product License dialog will open (because Stay signed in/ Don’t ask again was not enabled - and must be completed/ confirmed to continue).  However the dialogs can be hidden behind the Tedds application window and so cannot be seen or accessed.  Hence Tedds seems to be unresponsive, but is in fact simply waiting for confirmation of the Sign in and/ or Online License status.  To resolve and avoid this problem do the following:

Signing In

Always enable the “Stay signed in” option when you sign in.  There is no reason not to do this and it will avoid this issue completely.

  • If the problem described above has occurred, you can use Alt+Tab to display all open windows and select the hidden Sign in... dialog - then you can complete this and ensure you enable the “Stay signed in” option.

Select Product License

As stated above, this issue has now has now been fixed by Tekla Tedds 2020 - Service Pack 1 and Tekla License Service update May 2020 (v3.1.2).  Both these are required.  When you have installed these, if you do NOT enable the “Don’t ask me again” option when running the program, the Select Product License will now be displayed when - again - when you first run a calculation, allowing you to select the desired license.

For the most effective program use, we generally recommend you enable the “Don’t ask me again” option when you select the Product License to run the application.  You can change this setting to select a different license if you need to.

  • If the problem described above has occurred, open the Task Manager and End task the Tedds application to close it (it is not possible to access the hidden dialog currently if the Tedds application is maximised).
  • Run Tedds, when you are asked to select the Product License enable the “Don’t ask me again” option as shown below.
